Welcome Note

Dear FODEP,

Welcome to your blogsite.

This message is meant to briefly induct you on
how you can go about navigating around your brand new blogsite. The section you are viewing now is where you will place different articles, news and messages from time to time for the general public to read. This blog is designed so as to provide maximum interaction and feedback between the general public and you hence we have incorporated a feature that enables the general public to post comments on different articles and news as you post them. You can actually comment on this welcome note just to see how this feature works and how usefull it is.

There are generally seven pages in this blogsite as you will notice on the links at the top of this and each page in the site. Clicking on the FODEP's Mission link will take you to the page where the mission of your organization has been stated in brief terms. The 'Organization Structure' link takes you to the page explaining the structure of your organization while the 'FODEP's Contribution' link ushers you to a page where information concerning the contributions that FODEP has made is presented. There is another link in the same section that takes you to the page where information about some of the most important programmes FODEP has embarked on is presented. One excited page that we are sure you will find very interesting is the 'Meet our Staff page'. This page has been included to provide information to the general public about the staff that are currently working in your organization. The page will present pictures as well as basic information like names, position held, etc about all the members of staff at FODEP. Last but not least the 'Know youir Political Parties' link will connect you to the page where information about all the political parties in Zambia has been presented. This will be useful as now the general public will be able to read and find out information (eg manifestos, presidential candidates, etc) about any political party of their choice just by logging on to this site.

For now, this will be all the information you will need to get you started using this site. Note that the site is now live and online and Lupenga Consulting is at your command on a daily or hourly basis when ever you need to post new information or update existing information on this site. We hope that this blogsite will be of great value to your organization and we further hope that you will keep us busy by sending us news, articles, and related information as frequently as possible so that viewers may be kept informed all the time.

Don’t leave voter verification sensitization activities to ECZ alone-FODEP

An election’s legitimacy depends, in part, on the extent to which citizens participate. But it is impossible for people to express their sovereign will via the ballot box if the voters’ register is in shambles or if voters do not go out to cast their vote.

It is for this reason that the Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) would like to urge all those that participated in the voter registration exercise to turn en masse during the verification exercise which starts today and verify the correctness of their registration details in the provisional register.

Although the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has been carrying out media advertisements on the exercise, the overall assessment by FODEP of the voter education activities around the commencement of the verification exercise reveal that there has been very limited activities especially in rural areas. This, we hope, may not have a telling effect on the overall participation of the first-time voters in the exercise and consequently the voting process itself.

FODEP appeals to all politicians to provide leadership in this exercise by motivating their sympathizers and supporters to participate in the verification exercise to ensure that none of them is disenfranchised on voting day on account of incorrect and inaccurate details in the register.

We also appeal to the media to mainstream the voter verification publicity activities in their daily programming. FODEP members and other stakeholders are also encouraged to get involved voter verification sensitization activities so as to encourage as many people verify their details as possible.

In this regard, FODEP would like to see to it that voter education activities target the first-time voters (youths) and address issues of personal civic responsibility among them on how to take an active role in verifying their personal information on the provisional voters’ roll. It is by having and knowing sufficiently correct information of one’s details that one is guaranteed of their right to vote.

Finally, FODEP hopes that the verification centres will be accessible to all eligible voters and that the procedures and information packaging will be user friendly especially to persons with disabilities.
